The Watershed Management Extension Program focuses on topics that directly or indirectly affect water resources in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on forested land.

Objectives of the Watershed Management Extension Program are to:
  • Identify individuals and groups involved in watershed management and research and their distinct information needs.
  • Foster working relationships between policy-makers, researchers, and operational personnel.
  • Increase communication and timely access to information.
  • Assist in managing watershed management information.
  • Facilitate and/or create extension activities tailored to identified needs.
Program Goals:
  • Give people a greater awareness and understanding of the natural conditions of Coastal and Interior watersheds and the effects of watershed management; and
  • Create an awareness and understanding of innovative knowledge and current research results in watershed management.
Generally, these goals will be met through:
  • Greater collaboration among individuals and groups involved in watershed management (e.g., operational, policy, public and research communities).
  • Improved communication among identified client groups.
  • New or improved problem-solving tools and new research about watershed management.
The major topics of interest in this program are:
  • Results-based water resources management
  • Hydrologic processes in coastal and interior watersheds
  • Forest management effects on water quantity and quality
  • Stream function: effects of sediment, temperature and natural variation
  • Watershed management tools, methods and information sources
The general activities of the program include the following:
  • Identifying information needs and priorities.
  • Fostering information exchange and increased professional linkages between policy-makers, researchers, and operations.
  • Increasing awareness and timely access to watershed management information.
  • Increasing knowledge of current research results and innovations in watershed management.
  • Problem solving and creation of extension activities tailored to identified needs.
