Information Management & Technology Development
Some organizations are experiencing a knowing-doing gap in terms of information management and related technologies. They know managing information to develop knowledge is important and understand the elements of successful knowledge management, but do not know how to implement a strategy. Building on the “Information & Knowledge Management Basics” project, this project will focus on providing educational and extension support to natural resource organizations interested in the developing an IM strategy as well as adopting related IM tools, technologies, and best practices.

Activities will include outreach to FORREX’s natural resource management clients in the innovation and industry/policy sectors to find out what their IM challenges are and to research what potential IM solutions are available to address their needs. Needs assessments and information audits are generally conducted as well as evaluations on new and existing methods and their effectiveness in capturing, archiving, and disseminating information.

The foundation of this program will be built upon a comprehensive, objective collection of knowledge resources in the field of information and knowledge management. The IM extension specialist will coordinate the dissemination of this knowledge and continue to evaluate its use and application, as well as monitor for future knowledge gaps on an ongoing basis.

Finally, the IM extension team, partners, and network of volunteers will provide innovative learning opportunities that will effectively link clients to these knowledge resources and expertise. This project will focus on the "Information management strategies, tools, and technology" topic area as outlined in the program’s 5-year Extension Plan.

Planned Outcomes:
As a result of this project, organizations in natural resources communities will say they have a better understanding of some of the latest information management tools, strategies, and innovations that will support and enhance their activities. These outputs include information management best practices, value and performance measurement tools & strategies, documentation and cataloguing practices, and human resource development training. As a result of their participation, learners will say that they have adopted the necessary skills, attitudes, and behaviours that improve corporate efficiency and enhance activities to achieve organizational goals & objectives. All these outcomes are essential for supporting sustainable natural resource management decisions.
