Cumulative Impacts and Natural Resources: Bridging the gap between science,
knowledge, and economic development
Project Abstract: The term cumulative impacts often refers to the effects of multiple human uses of land and resources on ecosystem function and resilience. There is a need to better understand the results of recent studies, technologies, and decision support tools designed to assist resource policy, planning, and management experts in guiding future practices and emerging sustainable development opportunities. There is also a need to assist people in putting learning systems in place so that they can monitor indicators and adjust actions where monitoring results suggest negative impacts. This will mitigate impacts that may be irreversible. A multi disciplinary, cross sector community of practice will be in cumulative impacts will be established and work towards defining the current state of knowledge and activities in this area of practice. They will help define the scope of the challenge and work towards building an innovation strategy to ensure development opportunities can be explored that do not compromise ecosystems or community resilience.
