Extending knowledge to enable adaptation to social, economic, and environmental
changes in Aboriginal Communities
Project Abstract: First Nations organizations are identified along with forest and range licensees and government as the most important audience for the Provincial Forest Extension Program. Provincial and local needs assessments identified the need to improve Aboriginal participation in planning, policy, management, and business development. This project will focus on addressing planning, technical capacity building, participation, and partnerships. Social, economic, and environmental changes continue to influence and drive the need for adaptive strategies for First Nations communities in British Columbia. Global and local market pressures, past and present land use decisions, climate change, public policy, and the new relationships between First Nations and the Province create an opportunity to develop knowledge based strategies that will enable sustainable solutions to natural resource management challenges. Activities in this project will ensure that First Nations and natural resource sector partners have access to and can use the latest science, experiential, and indigenous knowledge in their planning and decision processes.
