FORREX worked with Forest Renewal BC and an associated advisory committee to identify key knowledge gaps with its partners in the operational and research communities and recommend ways to address those knowledge gaps through research and extension activities. This project assisted Forest Renewal BC in identifying and linking knowledge gaps to corporate strategic objectives and priorities. The final report is available in SIFERP Series 2. (1100 KB)

There were 4 stages to this project, and the Partnership delivered Stages 1 and 2.
Stage 1. Identifying knowledge gaps
Stage 2. Synthesis, analysis and prioritization of knowledge gaps
Stage 3. Directed request for proposal
Stage 4. Determination of investments

Stage 1 involved identifying local, sub-regional, regional and provincial knowledge gaps that support sustainable management of BC's natural resources, communities and economies. Knowledge gaps were identified and collected from a variety of sources including community workshops (Nelson, Kamloops, Williams Lake, Victoria, Vancouver, Smithers and Prince George) held in June-July, 2000 and an online Community Information Needs Survey. Please see Regional Workshop Summaries for details.

Stage 2 involved evaluating the information collected in Stage 1 to create a list of priority research investments. Synthesis and analysis of the workshops and their findings occured at a 2.5 day Provincial Think Tank workshop held in Vernon, August 15-17, 2000. Please see the summary of Think Tank Results for details.

Additional background information on knowledge gaps in British Columbia is also available, including the BC Knowledge Gaps Database and early reports on research in the Southern Interior.
