Project Abstract:
A matrix of 3000 scientifically reviewed indicators related to BC-relevant SFM criterion was prepared by Dr. Gordon Hickey and
Dr. John Innes as part of the Foundation project “Science Review and Gap Analysis”. This matrix was further refined to a smaller
set of British Columbia-specific indicators. Project partners determined in February 2006 that this matrix may be useful to
people in British Columbia who are developing forest management plans that require criteria and indicators of sustainable forest
management. Rather than publish the matrix as a series of tables it was recommended that the matrix would be of most use if it
were reformatted as a searchable, online and free-standing database and with filters that allow for sorting by indicators
relevant to BC. The University of British Columbia, with funding from the FIA Forest Science Program, has established the SFM
Criteria and Indicators Database Website with content based on the results from the foundation work. This content will be
extracted as a “point-in-time” reference to BC-related Criterion and Indictors and posted on a Web site. The BC site will be
updated on an annual basis as new information is developed through the UBC SFM C&I Database website.
This website will be useful in association with the final report from the foundation projects as well as links to current
development through the Sustainable Forest Management Lab at UBC.
Project Abstract:
The third objective of the initiative is to increase the understanding and use of criteria and indicator knowledge and tools.
Through extension and education, existing information on this topic will be synthesized and provided in various extension
formats, including niche libraries, written summaries, online tools and educational formats. Work this year will focus on
maintaining access to foundation work, and workshops to increase skills in criteria and indicator use.
Project Abstract:
British Columbia has established sustainable forest management goals and objectives.. The Ministry of Forests and Range produces
the State of the Forest Report, the Ministry of Environment contributes to the State of the Environment Report and the Forest
and Range Evaluation Program reports on progress against provincial objectives as stated the Forest and Range Practices Act.
The Forest Practices Board uses indicators to conduct and report on forest practices audits, and the Forest Industry uses
criterion and indicators to develop and monitor stewardship and forest management plan. The purpose of this project is to move
towards consensus on an effective and efficient framework where C&I informs strategic decision processes.
Project Abstract:
The second objective of the initiative is to improve efficiency, collaboration and coordination of the development of solutions
linked to criteria and indicators. This project will oversee the coordination, financial, communications and knowledge
management for the initiative. FORREX will coordinate the steering committee, communicate with various collaborators and
interested parties, manage project funds, and facilitate the production of progress reporting.
