Watershed Management Extension Education
Project Abstract: Managing watersheds is complex for those who are tasked with this responsibility and it requires a solid knowledge base. Fundamental knowledge of the basics of hydrology and geomorphology need to be provided to ensure sustainable watershed management. Increasingly, WM interest groups such as First Nations and community based groups (e.g. local watershed groups, stream keepers, etc.) are becoming actively involved in WM planning, monitoring and decision making, and desire greater knowledge of the basics of watershed processes and functions. To ensure sustainable watershed management and facilitate communication between parties by applying concepts and terminology correctly and consistently, basic WM education needs to be available. In 2009/10, the draft WM Basics curriculum will be delivered in 2–3 pilot workshops in BC. Audiences will be comprised of members of both the forest management and watershed management communities. Based on feedback received from these test events, the curriculum will be revised for future delivery. In addition, the Interior specialist, will attend the WaterEd Conference. This conference will attract education and extension organizations from Canada and the United States to discuss strategies for educating both students and adults (professionals) on water science and water resource management issues. This event will provide an opportunity to develop contacts with other agencies with similar goals and audiences and learn from their experiences.
